Ohawe Beach

Left Hawera this afternoon to go around the coast road first stop Ohawe Beach.

It was blowing a gale here not an inviting place to go for a walk when so windy.

Opunake

Free parking for max 3 nights

We will do the Opunake heritage walk tomorrow.

It is a lovely flat dairy farm country from Mt Taranaki to the coast. We passed a few old dairy factories along the way I’m guessing the big Fonterra factory in Hawera has made them obsolete over the years

Cape Egmont Lighthouse

The landscape changed here from flat dairy farmland to huge round mounds everywhere, and from sandy beaches to boulders. It’s like the mountain erupted out this way going into the sea

Okato

Tonight’s stay Okato Domain free parking very sheltered so very hot.

We went for a walk and saw an owl just lucky to get a photo.

Pukeiti Botanical Garden

Pukeiti Domain free parking, there is a cafe and gardens to visit. The road in is interesting, very narrow the last 2kms is driveway wide size. What can I say...if you visit the region and don’t visit Pukeiti you are truly missing out. Loved our walk this morning it was so sheltered and hot it did cause exhaustion, couldn’t even be bothered to have lunch in the cafe that we had planned instead lunched at home in our Motorhome and had a big nana nap, all the while a bobcat was collecting topsoil from beside us for a new garden. Finally, the heat is better this evening once the sun went behind the forest, maybe we will get a walk-in tonight. Once again like Hollard Gardens, the prime time to visit would be spring, when all the Azaleas and Rhododendrons are flowering, would be spectacular against the native bush.
